capioIT turns Three – Someday we’ll look back on this and it will all seem funny*

When one absorbs research highlighting that nearly 50% of small businesses fail within three years it is with great excitement and humility that we celebrate the third birthday of capioIT today. Not surprisingly the last three years have been the most exciting and passionate years of my professional career.

I am very grateful to everyone that has supported capioIT in the last 3 years. Of course, thanks has to firstly include clients, both from the buy and sell side, analyst relations teams, business partners (particularly those who support in Asia), and my fellow analysts both from the legacy analyst firms and other fellow emerging providers who have given support and encouragement.

When I look back to what I wanted to achieve three years ago, there was four core philosophies that I wanted to drive through the lifeblood of capioIT:

•       Capture

•       Understand

•       Collaborate

•       Innovate

These four philosophies are on the back of the capioIT business card so it is always easy to remind ourselves as to what we are trying to do for clients and the industry.  I sincerely hope they come through in our research outcomes and approaches.

Some Research Highlights

In the last three years, there have been many highlights. Whilst many are consulting based and as a clear result cannot be shared, there are some that we can report on. The strongest areas of research growth have been in analytics and BI as well as Natural Resources from an industry pov. This has complemented historical strength in service delivery models (Never forgetting that one person’s cloud is another’s outsourcing deal) . This has been highlighted in many of the 90 research notes and blog posts on capioIT.

From our perspective, the innovation and insight from the capture share reports has been very well received.

What is the capioIT Capture Share Report? http://wp.me/p15cZf-7H

The latest capture share report was released on the 20th of September was on the Natural Resources IT Solutions market in 2012. This capture share clearly highlighted the gap between the “haves” and ‘have nots” in this space

Last year we published a report on the best location for IT and BPO delivery in Australia. The success of this report has led to research for a follow up report, this time being focused on Canada being undertaken with a publishing date set for late 2013.

Ballarat strikes gold – Named the number one location for domestic IT services delivery in Australia http://wp.me/p15cZf-4K

I am always looking to capture and understand how the IT and Business services market is evolving. This led to research notes on the shift to asset based services and outcomes based pricing documented by capioIT this year.

Here are the two research notes of most interest for these topics.

Outcome Based Pricing – Adoption soars in Emerging markets http://wp.me/p15cZf-8G

Asset Based Services –Software based providers, not services providers have led the way. http://wp.me/p15cZf-6u

Business Principles of capioIT

capioIT has long recognised that in the analyst world there can be rogue providers who basically “pay for play” and at best just create content for vendors. capioIT is not one of those firms. As a result of concerns over the direction that some would push our industry, this year we also published some business principles.

This  viewpoint and approach by capioIT has in the past, and will continue to in the future, cost me revenue and business. Fortunately I believe that integrity is more important than short term revenue fixes.

The fourth Year

Enough about the past, the next few years are what will shape capioIT. In the short term there are two innovations that will be very exciting and help increase how we can deliver capabilities and insights to clients.

The first of these is a new website that will come out (hopefully) by the end of October. This is very exciting and as we evolve the website, there is the investment in a web access portal for clients and an eCommerce facility. This new website will also allow capioIT to more formally align content to the blog but also as research notes.

A new product – this is under wraps as we are still in the data gathering and scoping phase, but we have identified a gap in the market that will hopefully provide more depth into vendor investment and help align (or deflate) hype with market readiness and investments. All going well, expect a launch of this early in 2014.

capioIT in a snapshot

For those who have read this far and do not know ….

Focus on Emerging Markets – 70% of business is from Asia Pacific, most of the rest is from MEA, LATAM market etc

Focus on Emerging Technology – Asset based service delivery, Analytics and BI, Services delivery models, BPO, Natural Resources, Retail, Cloud …..

End User Engagement – Focus on selected markets and industries. Key support is provided around vendor selection and understanding and understanding the impact of technology change on the organisational ability to run their business.

Collaborations with like-minded firms and individuals provide scope to offer a global level of research engagement or localised in markets as small as South Africa, UAE and Vietnam.

Professionalism and focus on “usable” insight – Research that sits on a real or virtual shelf is irrelevant. capioIT is focused on producing insight and outcomes that are real and can be implemented or acted upon. This is easy to say, hard to do.

Enough writing about capioIT. Three years for most businesses is a milestone that should be celebrated. I am grateful for all and any who have supported, helped and encouraged us in large and small ways over the last three years. I continue to be inspired and passionate about what I do and this mindset will mean the next three years will be even more successful than the first three.

Please reach out and let me know what I do well and where I am lacking. I take all advice …..

Thanks again.

* The title refers to a lyric from a Bruce Springsteen Song Rosalita (Come out tonight). Completely coincidental that I established capioIT on Bruce Springsteen’s birthday. Honest.
